Cookies are “.txt” files, provided to your browser by a web server and then stored on your computer’s hard drive. The use of cookies is a current standard on many of the important sites you visit.

Most browsers are set to accept cookies. However, if you do not prefer this, you can reset your browser, either to notify you whenever you receive a cookie, or even to refuse the acceptance of cookies. Cookies allow us to save your access passwords and preferences so that you do not have to enter them again the next time you visit us.

Cookies play a very important role in online experiences. Thus, thanks to them, users can customize online browsing in detail, choosing the language in which a site is viewed, the currency in which certain prices or rates are displayed, keeping and storing choices (on online shopping sites, for example).

These files are also important for site owners, as they provide valuable feedback on the user experience, how sites are used, and help them develop them as effectively as possible.

Cookies also allow multimedia applications or other types of applications to be included in a certain site in order to generate a browsing experience that is as valuable and useful as possible, but also as pleasant as possible. In addition, they make effective online advertising by displaying those ads that are in line with each user’s browsing interests.

What is a “cookie”?
According to the National Authority for the Supervision of Personal Data Processing, an “Internet Cookie” (also known as “browser cookie” or “HTTP cookie” or simply “cookie”) is a small file, consisting of letters and numbers, which will be stored on the computer, mobile terminal or other equipment of a user from whom the Internet is accessed.
The cookie is installed by request issued by a webserver to a browser (eg Internet Explorer, Chrome, Mozilla) and is completely “passive” (does not contain software, viruses or spyware and can not access information on the hard disk- the user).

A cookie consists of two parts: the name and the content or value of the cookie. Moreover, the lifespan of a cookie is determined; technically, only the webserver that sent the cookie can access it again when a user returns to the website associated with that webserver.

There are two major categories of cookies:

Session cookies – these are temporarily stored in the cookies folder of the web browser for the user to store until the user leaves the respective website or closes the browser window (for example, when logging in / out on a webmail account or on social networks).
Persistent cookies – these are stored on the hard drive of a computer or equipment. They also include those placed by a website other than the one the user is currently visiting – known as ‘third party cookies’ – which can be used anonymously to store the interests of a user, so that the most relevant publicity is delivered to him.

Security and privacy
Cookies are not viruses! Cookies use plain text formats. They are not made up of pieces of code so they cannot be executed or run. Thus, they cannot be duplicated or replicated on other networks.

However, cookies can be used for negative purposes. Because it stores information about the preferences and browsing history of Internet users, they can be used as a form of Spyware. Many anti-spyware products are aware of this and constantly mark cookies to be deleted during anti-virus / anti-spyware deletion / scanning procedures.

In general, browsers have built-in privacy settings that provide different levels of acceptance of cookies, validity period and automatic deletion after the user has visited a particular site.

Sometimes, for example, an unauthorized third party may intervene in the browser-server relationship and intercept the data contained in cookies. Although very rare, this can happen if the browser connects to the server using an unencrypted network, such as an unsecured wireless network.

Other cookie-based attacks may involve incorrect cookie settings on servers. If a website does not require the browser to use only encrypted channels, attackers can use this vulnerability to trick browsers into sending information through unsecured channels. Attackers then use the information to gain unauthorized access to certain sites.

Due to their flexibility and the fact that most of the most visited sites use cookies, they are almost inevitable. Disabling cookies will not allow the user to access the most used sites including Youtube, Gmail, Yahoo and others.

Tips on using cookies
Set your browser to your browsing needs and to a comfortable level of security.
If you’re the only person accessing a computer, you can set longer expiration dates to have as much storage history and other traffic data stored as possible.
If more than one person is using the same computer as you, you can set your browser to clear your browsing data each time you log out.
Install antispyware applications.

How can I stop cookies?
Cookies may be disabled, but disabling them will make it difficult to navigate certain sites. In each browser there is the possibility to turn off cookies from settings (or options).
